NEWS BRIEF

Farmers Insurance, Farmers Insurance Exchange, and its affiliated companies and subsidiaries filed breach notification documents after falling victim to a “security incident” through a third-party vendor.

According to the filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General, more than 1 million customers were affected by the breach, which occurred May 29 and was discovered the next day.

In its notification letter, the company said that its third-party vendors alerted Farmers and its subsidiaries of suspicious activity involving an unauthorized actor accessing one of the vendor’s databases containing customer information.

“The third-party vendor had monitoring tools in place, which allowed the vendor to quickly detect the activity and take appropriate containment measures, including blocking the unauthorized actor,” wrote the company in its letter. “After learning of the activity, Farmers immediately launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the nature and scope of the Incident and notified appropriate law enforcement authorities.”

On July 24, the investigation determined that some of the personal information of the company’s customers was compromised. However, the company didn’t divulge the kind of personal information involved.

The company noted that while it is unaware of any instances in which the compromised personal information of its customers has been misused, it will be providing affected individuals with two years of complimentary identity monitoring services.

The Farmers conglomerate is one of multiple companies to have suffered and publicly reported some kind of security incident in recent weeks. Others include tech manufacturer Data I/O and drug research firm Inotiv.
