What’s the Problem?

Federal authorities and cybersecurity researchers issued urgent warnings after discovering that a critical vulnerability in Fortinet’s web application firewall, FortiWeb, had been actively exploited in the wild. Despite patching the flaw (CVE-2025-64446) on October 28, Fortinet’s delayed public disclosure—only revealing the vulnerability 17 days later—left many customers vulnerable and unprepared. This defect, with a dangerously high CVSS score of 9.8, enabled attackers to execute administrative commands, resulting in complete control over compromised devices, and was exploited by malicious actors to create persistent backdoor access. Researchers and threat teams, including CISA, observed widespread, untargeted attacks since early October, already leveraging the vulnerability before it was publicly acknowledged, partly due to Fortinet’s slow communication, which hampered defenders’ response efforts.

The crisis stems largely from Fortinet’s handling of the vulnerability, which some experts describe as a “silently patched” flaw rather than a zero-day, yet it functioned as one in practice, with attackers exploiting it before users received official guidance or updates. The lack of prompt, transparent communication impeded security teams’ ability to respond effectively, giving cybercriminals a strategic advantage and heightening the risk for Fortinet’s customers. The incident underscores the importance of timely disclosure and cooperative industry transparency, as delays in sharing critical information allow malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities unchecked, escalating the threat landscape for organizations relying on Fortinet’s products.

When Fortinet delays issuing alerts on actively exploited vulnerabilities, any business relying on its security measures faces significant risk of exploitation, leaving them vulnerable to cyberattacks that could compromise sensitive data, disrupt operations, or incur costly breaches; such delays diminish proactive defenses, erode confidence in security infrastructure, and could lead to substantial financial and reputational damage, proving that timely alerts are crucial for maintaining resilience in today’s rapidly evolving threat landscape.
