Iranian Hackers Deploy DeepRoot & TwoStroke Malware in Aerospace & Defense Attacks

Problem Explained

In a recent cyber espionage revelation, security researchers have linked a sophisticated Iranian threat group, known as UNC1549 or Nimbus Snail, to ongoing malicious activities targeting aerospace, aviation, and defense sectors in the Middle East. Over the course of late 2023 through 2025, this group has employed an array of advanced hacking techniques, including exploiting third-party relationships and spear-phishing campaigns, to breach high-value organizations. The attackers specifically target IT staff and administrative personnel to harvest credentials, then deploy a suite of custom malware, such as TWOSTROKE and DEEPROOT, to facilitate lateral movement, credential theft, and long-term covert access. Their goal appears to be the extraction of sensitive intellectual property, network documents, and emails, all while deploying stealthy tools and maintaining persistent access through covert backdoors that can remain dormant for months, evading detection and complicating investigations.

This clandestine activity was uncovered and reported by cybersecurity firm Mandiant, who noted the group’s clever use of the compromised third-party links, especially exploiting trust in service providers that connect to major organizations. The threat actors utilize a diverse arsenal of malware and hacking utilities, including tools that mimic industry-specific domains and siphon credentials from popular enterprise services like Citrix and VMWare. The campaign’s complexity and focus on maintaining persistence highlight a strategic effort to infiltrate high-security environments for espionage, with deliberate measures to thwart detection and investigation, signaling an alarming escalation in the scope and sophistication of cyber threats against critical infrastructure sectors.
