Fast Facts

  1. Ransomware attacks in India remain targeted, with only 0.28% of enterprise users affected, focusing on high-value targets to reduce incidents.
  2. Top ransomware families like PolyRansom, Wanna, and others modify data, demanding ransom for recovery, predominantly affecting Indian enterprises.
  3. India faces approximately 665 ransomware attempts daily, with emerging AI-powered groups outpacing traditional attackers and targeting critical sectors.
  4. Organizations must adopt comprehensive cybersecurity practices—such as updated software, offline backups, advanced threat detection, and threat intelligence—to effectively defend against evolving ransomware threats.

Targeted and Precise Ransomware Attacks on Indian Businesses

In the first half of 2025, ransomware attacks have affected a small portion of Indian businesses. Only 0.28% of companies using Kaspersky’s services experienced an attack. However, this doesn’t mean the threat is minor. Cybercriminals focus on high-value targets, making their attacks more targeted and effective. Unlike random attacks, these criminals carefully choose their victims, which explains the low overall percentage. Indian organizations face around 665 ransomware attempts daily, resulting in over 243,500 blocked attacks last year. These figures highlight how persistent and widespread these threats remain.

Insights and Strategies for Better Defense

Kaspersky identified the top ransomware families targeting Indian enterprises. These include Trojan-Ransom.Win32.PolyRansom, Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Gen, and Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Wanna. These types of malware encrypt or damage data, making it unusable until a ransom is paid. Attackers often send a ransom demand to victims, promising to restore data once the payment is made. Experts warn that AI-powered ransomware gangs are now more sophisticated. They use AI-generated code and low-cost tactics to attack critical areas like government, finance, and tech sectors. This development means Indian businesses must strengthen their defenses with advanced security tools and timely threat intelligence. Proactive measures—such as regular updates, offline backups, and specialized security solutions—are vital to protect digital assets from increasingly clever cyber threats.
