Fast Facts

  1. The ShinyHunters gang has repeatedly breached Instructure’s Canvas LMS, with ongoing disruptive activity despite company claims of containment.
  2. The breach exposed extensive data from nearly 9,000 institutions, including personal information and private messages of around 275 million individuals.
  3. Schools experienced significant disruptions, with some students unable to access grades or contact teachers due to the ransomware messages and outages.
  4. The incident poses severe risks, especially to minors’ data, raising critical concerns about the security standards for platforms managing sensitive educational information.

Second Attack Claims: ShinyHunters Targets Instructure Again

Recently, the hacking group ShinyHunters announced they struck Instructure for the second time. Just hours after Instructure said the incident was over, the hackers claimed a new breach. The company had initially reported that they removed all threats from their system. However, the hackers disagreed and continued their activities. This ongoing attack has caused concern among students, teachers, and school administrators. It also raises questions about how safe online education platforms truly are during such disturbances.

Impacts and Concerns from the Ongoing Breach

The breach involves the popular Canvas learning system, used by many schools and colleges today. ShinyHunters claims to have stolen a massive amount of data, including names, emails, and private messages between students and teachers. Some reports indicate that the hackers have left messages threatening to leak the data. Additionally, affected users experienced interruptions and could not access their classrooms or grades. While the company states the incident is contained, many believe the situation is still unstable. Experts warn that such breaches expose minors’ data, which can have lasting consequences on their privacy and security.
