Summary Points

  1. AI is seen as both the greatest positive and negative force in cybersecurity, improving defenses but also enabling sophisticated threats like AI-powered social engineering and deepfakes.
  2. Cybersecurity professionals are most concerned about AI’s role in social engineering, with threats expected to intensify over the next few years.
  3. Despite fears, 41% of respondents believe AI will significantly benefit cybersecurity by automating low-value tasks, boosting productivity, and creating new jobs.
  4. Experts view AI as a tool to enhance decision-making and address talent shortages, with a focus on developing human skills like teamwork and critical thinking.

AI’s Dual Role in Cybersecurity

Many cybersecurity experts see artificial intelligence (AI) as both a helpful tool and a potential threat. A recent survey of over 16,000 cybersecurity professionals shows mixed feelings about AI. On one side, AI can improve security by helping protect organizations. On the other, it can be used maliciously in cyberattacks. For example, AI has already been involved in creating convincing fake videos and phishing scams. Experts worry that AI-powered social engineering could make cyber threats more dangerous. The same survey reports that over half of the professionals believe AI will bring the biggest negative impact to their security efforts. This means that while AI offers new ways to fight cybercrime, it also opens new doors for cybercriminals.

Balancing Benefits and Risks of AI Adoption

Despite these concerns, many professionals also see bright sides to AI. Around 41% say AI will be one of the top benefits for cybersecurity in the near future. Many have started testing AI tools, and most report positive results. About 63% say AI has increased their productivity, saving time on repetitive tasks. Interestingly, many believe AI will create more jobs in the industry, especially those requiring technical and communication skills. Experts argue that AI can free up their time for more important decisions and higher-level work. They also see AI as a way to solve staffing shortages and improve teamwork. Overall, the debate over AI’s impact continues. With ongoing developments, it remains a technology to watch closely.
