Vast Number of Data Center Controllers Vulnerable to Takeover

Thousands of Servers Vulnerable to Old Flaw

Recent research reveals that over 24,000 internet-connected server controllers face a significant security risk. These controllers, known as Baseboard Management Controllers (BMCs), run on a flaw dating back more than 20 years. This flaw allows hackers to crack passwords and gain control of servers. What makes this issue worse is that BMCs work independently of the server’s main system. Therefore, they often stay hidden from common security tools. As a result, attackers can secretly exploit these controllers and access sensitive hardware functions. Some malicious actors have already been seen using this vulnerability in real cyber attacks. This situation highlights the need for better security measures for out-of-band management systems.

Potential for Widespread Damage and Practical Steps

The risk is serious because BMCs have high-level access to data centers. They manage power, system health, and remote console functions. An attacker gaining control could disable servers, modify firmware, deploy ransomware, or access internal data. This could lead to widespread disruptions in large organizations. Many of the vulnerable BMCs use outdated passwords, making hacking easier. Researchers found that some default passwords are predictable, reducing the time needed for hackers to break in. To protect systems, experts recommend isolating BMCs from the internet. They also advise restricting access to trusted networks, changing default passwords, and monitoring network activity continually. These steps help reduce the danger—yet, many organizations still need to improve their security protocols for management controllers.
