Agents Work Everywhere—Governance Must Keep Up

Top Highlights

  1. Organizations are unknowingly running many unapproved AI tools, creating security blind spots and risks.
  2. Accurate agent inventory, live capability monitoring, and scoped identities are essential to prevent malicious activity and ensure compliance.
  3. Existing security controls fail to see the full AI workflow chain, requiring real-time monitoring and prompt correction to stop attacks.
  4. The lack of end-to-end visibility hinders ROI tracking and efficient AI governance; implementing integrated governance across tools is critical.

Agents Are Everywhere, But Governance Must Follow Suit

Today, agents are no longer confined to specific tasks or isolated systems. Instead, they operate across every part of an organization’s digital footprint—from browsers and endpoints to cloud servers. Employees may not realize it, but they’re pointing agents at their work continuously. These agents often carry tools and capabilities that are unapproved, hidden, or unmanaged. For example, recent discoveries show an explosion in AI tools running without oversight. Such uncontrolled growth creates blind spots for security teams. They cannot accurately track or manage what agents are installed and what they do. Without a comprehensive inventory, organizations remain vulnerable. To address this, companies need real-time visibility of all agents, their capabilities, and their behaviors. This step ensures security teams can quickly flag risky tools, remove unauthorized agents, and maintain a clear picture of the agentic workforce.

Building a Governance Framework for the Agentic Workforce

The widespread use of agents also brings challenges around attribution, accountability, and chain of actions. When agents act on behalf of employees, logs often misrepresent who performed what task. This misattribution hampers incident response and compliance with regulations. Meanwhile, organizations are issuing non-human identities and credentials at a rapid pace, often without proper controls. Keys get hardcoded, identities go dormant, and scope drift widens—all increasing attack surfaces. To prevent this, organizations must implement tight control points that span across all channels—network, devices, SaaS, and AI platforms. These points can assign just-in-time, scoped permissions, and enforce boundaries on agent actions. Moreover, comprehensive, real-time monitoring of the entire chain of actions—prompt incepts, tool calls, and outputs—is crucial. This approach helps detect malicious activity early and adapt responses in the moment. As AI and agents become ingrained in daily workflows, governance must expand beyond traditional boundaries. Integrating these controls into a unified policy engine ensures that organizations can not only keep track of what agents do but also guide their behavior responsibly, creating a resilient, transparent, and accountable digital environment.
