Essential Insights

  1. The bug bounty industry is experiencing a surge in vulnerability reports due to AI and large language models, causing increased submission volumes and longer triage and payout times.
  2. As a result, the value of midtier vulnerabilities ($10,000-$50,000) is decreasing, with some bug prices halving or more, impacting independent researchers relying on these payouts.
  3. AI is also producing low-quality, "slop" reports, leading platforms to implement filtering strategies; AI is being used to assist, but not replace, human judgment in bug hunting.
  4. Despite market shifts and challenges, the bug bounty ecosystem is resilient, with ongoing opportunities for researchers and a potential evolution rather than extinction of the middle class of bug hunters.

The Vulnpocalypse’s Impact on Bug Hunters and Market Dynamics

Recently, a major shift, known as the “vulnpocalypse,” has started to reshape the bug bounty scene. As AI and large language models generate a flood of vulnerability reports, companies face longer review times. This overload puts independent researchers, especially those focusing on midtier bugs worth $10,000 to $50,000, under increasing pressure. While bug submissions surge, the time it takes to validate and pay out for these reports also grows. This situation affects the livelihood of many freelancers who rely on consistent payouts for their work. Overall, the industry is experiencing a shift that could change how bugs are valued and hunted in the future.

Market Changes and the Future of Bug Hunting

As more vulnerabilities get reported, the value of many bugs appears to be dropping. Experts say that bugs once worth thousands of dollars now fetch much less, especially in the middle to lower price ranges. For example, certain bugs that paid over $30,000 now might only be worth around $5,000. Despite these downward trends, the total amount paid out by bug bounty programs continues to rise, and more researchers are entering the field. Many are turning to AI tools to help find bugs faster, making bug hunting more of a volume game. While the landscape is changing, experts believe the bug bounty ecosystem will persist, albeit in a different form. They see new opportunities emerging for researchers to adapt and thrive in this evolving environment.
