The infection process involves multiple scripts and files saved in system directories like /Library/Application Support/.com.apple.accountsd/ and /Library/Application Support/.com.apple.metadata.mds/. The malware also prompts the user for their password, helping it gain necessary permissions for deep system access. The post-infection traffic mainly involves HTTP POST requests to a command and control (C2) server, sending various data stages like credentials, messengers, and wallets. The URLs and server IPs change often, indicating a highly adaptable and evolving malware family.

Impact, Implications, and Guidance

The AMOS stealer’s impact can be severe. It exfiltrates personal information, login details, and application data. This can lead to identity theft, unauthorized transactions, and loss of privacy. The malware’s ability to persist in system directories means it can remain active even after a restart. Additionally, its activity often involves prompting users for passwords, which can trick users into granting deeper access unknowingly. The frequent changes in server IPs, URLs, and filenames show that AMOS stealer is actively developed and easy to adapt. This makes it harder for defenders to create effective, long-lasting defense measures. Because of the malware’s sophistication, it is crucial to get remediation guidance from the relevant security vendors or authorities. If you suspect infection, do not attempt manual removal without expert help. Instead, contact your security provider or incident response team promptly. Keeping systems updated, avoiding suspicious links, and monitoring network traffic for unusual activity are important security steps.
