They searched for unknown vulnerabilities in security products and network tools. The report also warns that AI is being used to support biological research that could be misused to develop weapons, such as deadly viruses or toxins. These threats show how AI-driven operations can be broad, persistent, and hard to detect.

Impacts, Security Implications, and Guidance

The use of AI in cyber attacks and biological misuse has serious effects. Laboratories need to understand that their connected systems, like research data, credentials, cloud storage, and equipment, are at risk. Increased connectivity can improve automation but also makes unauthorized access more dangerous. Organizations should set clear permissions, keep detailed audit trails, and require human approval for critical actions. This helps reduce the chances of misuse. The report states that organizations must go beyond just checking AI output. They need policies about who can access AI, what systems are involved, and how to detect misuse. For now, labs should consult their vendors or security authorities for detailed remediation steps. Proper safeguards, role training, and independent safety measures are crucial to prevent and respond to threats effectively.
