Fast Facts

  1. Hackers exploit overlooked nonhuman accounts in Microsoft 365, often with default credentials and no MFA, to access sensitive enterprise data.
  2. Attackers use tools like TeamFiltration to identify forgotten or unmanaged service accounts, enabling broad data exfiltration without breaching employee accounts.
  3. Many such accounts are created for temporary or automated tasks and are abandoned or poorly secured, posing significant security risks.
  4. Organizations should inventory all accounts, assign responsibility to human employees, and enforce account review processes to mitigate these vulnerabilities effectively.

Hackers Use Overlooked Accounts to Steal Data in Chile

Recently, hackers have found new ways to access private data from organizations in Chile. They focus on “machine” accounts in Microsoft 365 (M365), which are often forgotten. These accounts are created for automated tasks or business functions. However, these accounts sometimes become mismanaged or left unprotected. As a result, hackers use basic tools to spray credentials and break into these nonhuman accounts. Instead of targeting individual employees’ accounts, they gain entry through these overlooked accounts. Once inside, they can access emails, chat messages, files, and even broader cloud services. This method shows how neglected accounts can turn into weak links, putting valuable data at risk.

How Nonhuman Accounts Pose a Threat

Experts say many organizations create service accounts for specific tasks. Over time, these accounts may be abandoned or forgotten. When this happens, they often continue to hold default passwords and lack added security features, such as multi-factor authentication. Because no one monitors these accounts, hackers can easily find and exploit them. One security researcher recommends always linking cloud accounts to an employee, even if the account performs only automated functions. Setting expiration dates for such accounts also helps prevent long-term vulnerabilities. To better protect themselves, organizations should review their existing accounts and look for unusual naming patterns that could indicate unused or insecure accounts. Proper management can reduce the chances of data theft through these hidden risks, making the digital environment safer for everyone.
