This landscape is more complicated than ever. For example, many secrets are duplicated across multiple locations on developer machines and CI/CD runners. When these secrets are compromised, hackers can access entire systems. Recent incidents show how sensitive information leaks from developer endpoints and automation tools. Protecting only the code repository is no longer enough. Instead, security must expand to cover every place where credentials are stored and used. Organizations that implement controls for secrets hygiene, monitor token lifecycle, and secure machines will be better prepared. This approach turns credential management into the foundation of future security strategies in the AI era.
