What’s the Problem?

Named ‘MalTerminal,’ this malware stands out because it doesn’t rely on static, pre-written code; instead, it uses GPT-4 to dynamically create ransomware or reverse shells tailored to each target, complicating detection efforts. This innovative approach signifies a dangerous evolution in cyber threats, as traditional defenses that rely on recognizing known malicious code signatures become ineffective. The malware, developed before November 2023, prompts operators to choose between deploying ransomware or reverse shells, with GPT-4 then generating the required code on demand, presenting a significant challenge for security teams.

The discovery highlights a paradigm shift in adversarial tactics, where cybercriminals embed API keys, specific prompt structures, and other artifacts directly into their malware to facilitate LLM integration. SentinelLABS’ research involved hunting for these artifacts across vast digital repositories, identifying over 7,000 samples containing embedded API keys—most of which were benign or errors—until they pinpointed MalTerminal.
