AI Security Vulnerabilities Uncovered

Hillai Ben Sasson and Dan Segev, researchers at Wiz, recently revealed alarming security risks in artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Over two years of research, they compromised major AI platforms. Their work began with hacking attempts on the AI infrastructure, focusing on foundational models. Surprisingly, their findings escalated into a detailed threat assessment across five layers of the AI stack.

They emphasize that organizations should prioritize securing the infrastructure that supports AI, rather than solely focusing on specific attack vectors like prompt injection. Current business practices often overlook these critical security fundamentals. Many chief information security officers (CISOs) express concern over AI’s access to core business systems. Despite these worries, companies rush to adopt AI for innovation and cost savings, sometimes neglecting security.

Layers of Risk in AI Frameworks

The researchers identified five risk layers. Training models present the highest risk of data leaks. For instance, a security flaw allowed open access to 38TB of training data for Microsoft models. At the inference stage, they located numerous vulnerabilities, including flaws in popular services.

Prompt injection issues exist, but broader security gaps, particularly in vibe coding platforms, pose significant risks. The researchers found that almost all vibe-coded apps they examined could be exploited quickly. Furthermore, vulnerabilities extend to the AI clouds hosting these models. A single flaw in AI infrastructure could impact thousands of customers simultaneously.

Ultimately, the threat landscape continues to evolve. Fixing these security issues requires a systematic approach. Regular compliance checks and improved security protocols will become essential as attacks grow more sophisticated. Companies can no longer afford to ignore the foundational risks present in their AI systems.
