Summary Points

  1. Rising Threat: Ransomware attacks on the oil and gas industry surged by 935% from April 2024 to April 2025, driven by increased automation and digitization of industrial control systems.

  2. Data Breaches: The volume of data stolen in ransomware incidents skyrocketed by 92%, reaching 238 terabytes, highlighting a shift from encryption-only attacks to data extortion.

  3. U.S. Targeted: 50% of all ransomware attacks during the survey period targeted the U.S., with attacks doubling to 3,671, surpassing all other countries combined.

  4. Emerging Groups: The number of ransomware groups reached 425, with three major players—RansomHub, Akira, and Clop—dominating the landscape, and 34 new groups emerging over the survey period.

Ransomware Waves: A Rising Tide in Oil and Gas

Ransomware attacks against oil and gas firms have surged alarmingly. Between April 2024 and April 2025, their frequency jumped by 935%. Many factors contribute to this rise. First, the industry’s shift to automation and digital systems increases vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals exploit these weaknesses, targeting outdated security measures.

Moreover, a staggering 50% of ransomware incidents focus on U.S. companies. During this period, attacks more than doubled, with 3,671 incidents reported. Notably, this number surpasses attacks in the next 14 countries combined. Clearly, the oil and gas sector must prioritize cybersecurity.

Understanding the Threat Landscape

A recent report highlights a significant trend in ransomware strategies. Attackers no longer rely solely on encrypting data. Instead, they frequently threaten data exposure, amplifying stress on victims. In fact, data theft surged by 92%, totaling 238 terabytes in just one year. This shift in tactics raises the stakes considerably for affected firms.

The most active cybercriminal groups, such as RansomHub and Akira, have strengthened their influence. They target common software vulnerabilities, taking advantage of widely used technologies. Worryingly, 34 new ransomware groups emerged during this survey period, illustrating the growing threat. As these attacks escalate, oil and gas companies hold a crucial responsibility. Investing in robust cybersecurity measures can help protect not just their assets, but also the broader energy infrastructure.
