LangSmith Bug Puts OpenAI Keys and User Data at Risk

Underlying Problem

On June 17, 2025, cybersecurity researchers, including Sasi Levi and Gal Moyal, disclosed a critical security vulnerability in LangChain’s LangSmith platform, named AgentSmith by Noma Security. This flaw, which received a CVSS score of 8.8, allowed malicious actors to deploy compromised AI agents via LangChain Hub, posing a grave risk to unsuspecting users. When a user engaged with a tainted agent, their interactions were secretly routed through a proxy server controlled by the attacker. Consequently, sensitive data—such as API keys, personal prompts, and uploaded documents—was exfiltrated without the user’s knowledge, potentially leading to unauthorized access to OpenAI environments and significant financial repercussions.

LangSmith, designed for the development and oversight of large language model applications, meant to streamline user experiences, inadvertently facilitated this exploitation. The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed on October 29, 2024, and was patched on November 6, 2024; however, the incident underscores a broader trend in cybersecurity threats, exemplified by the emergence of new variants of “WormGPT.” This generation of generative AI tools, associated with unethical and illegal activities, highlights the urgent need for heightened vigilance in the domain of LLM security.
