HITRUST, a recognized leader in information security assurance for compliance and risk management, has named Tom Kellermann as its new Vice President of Cyber Risk. Kellermann, an established authority in cybersecurity strategy, policy, and risk oversight, will guide the organization’s industry outreach, foster new market opportunities, and strengthen initiatives focused on third-party and supply chain protection.

With over 20 years of cybersecurity leadership in both governmental and corporate sectors, Kellermann will oversee the promotion and implementation of HITRUST’s threat-adaptive security and AI-based assessment offerings. He will also champion operational tools designed to enhance the efficiency of Third Party Risk Management (TPRM), including digital results sharing, concierge onboarding, and the company’s recent integration with ServiceNow’s TPRM platform—providing organizations with measurable and dependable information security assurances.

Recent findings from Verizon’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report indicate that third parties are implicated in 30% of data breaches. Kellermann’s work will center on helping organizations strengthen supply chain resilience by combining advanced threat assessments with practical enablement resources. His leadership will aim to simplify TPRM processes, lower operational costs, and improve risk mitigation strategies, while also offering guidance to enterprises, industry groups, and government agencies on proven approaches to cybersecurity and compliance.

Blake Sutherland, Executive Vice President of Market Engagement at HITRUST, welcomed Kellermann’s arrival:
“Tom’s unique background, blending public-sector advisory experience with private-sector cybersecurity expertise, will be a tremendous asset as we work to deliver unmatched cyber resilience. His knowledge and leadership will help us achieve our mission of providing verifiable proof of risk reduction.”

Before joining HITRUST, Kellermann served as Chief Cybersecurity Officer for Carbon Black Inc. and led cybersecurity strategy at VMware. His professional background also includes leadership roles at Contrast Security, Trend Micro, and Core Security, along with service as Deputy CISO for the World Bank Treasury. In government, he has been appointed to the U.S. Secret Service Cyber Investigations Advisory Board (2020) and served on the Commission on Cyber Security for the 44th U.S. President (2008).

Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Kellermann stated:
“Organizations today require clear, measurable evidence of cybersecurity effectiveness. HITRUST’s vision and practical approach align perfectly with my commitment to delivering solutions that truly protect. I’m eager to contribute to the industry’s advancement in cyber risk management.”

In addition to his executive contributions, Kellermann has an extensive record in cybersecurity education and thought leadership. He taught cybercrime courses at American University’s School of International Service and Kogod School of Business from 2007 to 2015, became a Global Fellow for Cyber Policy at the Wilson Center in 2017, and co-authored the 2003 publication “Electronic Safety and Soundness: Securing Finance in a New Age.” He also holds the Certified Information Security Manager certification.

Kellermann’s appointment underscores HITRUST’s commitment to equipping organizations with the tools, insights, and assurance needed to navigate evolving cyber threats and safeguard the global digital economy.
