Fast Facts

  1. WatchGuard released updates fixing CVE-2025-9242, a critical remote code execution vulnerability in Firebox firewalls caused by an out-of-bounds write in Fireware OS, affecting multiple versions since 11.x.
  2. The flaw impacts devices configured with IKEv2 VPN, including both mobile and branch office VPNs, even if vulnerable configurations have been deleted, if static gateway peers remain configured.
  3. Administrators are advised to immediately patch affected devices or implement temporary workarounds—such as disabling dynamic peer BOVPNs—due to the threat of exploitation by attackers.
  4. Although not yet exploited in the wild, the vulnerability poses a significant risk, especially since threat actors target firewalls like WatchGuard and SonicWall, highlighting the importance of timely security updates.

What’s the Problem?

WatchGuard has announced critical security updates to fix a severe vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-9242, that threatens its Firebox firewalls—devices essential for protecting network boundaries. This flaw stems from an out-of-bounds write bug in the Fireware OS iked process, which can allow remote attackers to execute malicious code without authentication, potentially hijacking the impacted devices. The vulnerability impacts several versions of Fireware OS, particularly those configured with IKEv2 VPNs—used for establishing secure remote connections. Even if administrators have deleted vulnerable VPN configurations, the Firebox remains at risk if branch office VPNs to static gateways are still active. The company advises immediate patching, providing temporary workarounds for urgent cases, although no active exploits have been observed yet. The security incident was disclosed publicly by WatchGuard in a Wednesday advisory, emphasizing the need for prompt updates to prevent potential breaches by malicious actors, who often target firewall vulnerabilities, as demonstrated by recent exploits like the Akira ransomware gang’s activities.

This vulnerability’s revelation underscores the ongoing threat environment, especially given past alerts from agencies like CISA regarding similar flaws. WatchGuard, which partners with over 17,000 resellers and services a quarter-million organizations globally, recognizes the importance of prompt action, as compromised firewalls could lead to severe breaches. The incident highlights a broader climate where cybersecurity weaknesses persist despite awareness and defensive measures, with threat actors continually seeking vulnerabilities like this to penetrate networks—transforming firewall updates from routine maintenance into critical defenses against cyberattacks.

What’s at Stake?

WatchGuard recently released critical security updates addressing a severe vulnerability, CVE-2025-9242, found in Firebox firewalls running Fireware OS versions 11.x (out of support), 12.x, and 2025.1, which allows remote attackers to execute malicious code through an out-of-bounds write flaw in the iked process. This flaw primarily jeopardizes firewalls configured with IKEv2 VPN—particularly when connected to static gateway peers—raising concerns about potential remote compromise even if specific VPN configurations are deleted. If exploited, this vulnerability can enable attackers to take full control of affected devices, undermining network security, exposing sensitive data, and facilitating further attacks such as ransomware deployment. Though currently unexploited in the wild, the threat landscape indicates that cybercriminals are actively weaponsizing similar vulnerabilities (like CVE-2024-40766 in SonicWall devices). Consequently, organizations are urged to promptly apply patches or implement recommended workarounds—such as disabling vulnerable VPN configurations—to mitigate risk, as firewalls remain an attractive target for threat actors aiming to breach organizational defenses and propagate attacks across network infrastructure.

Fix & Mitigation

Understanding the importance of timely remediation in addressing the critical vulnerability identified in WatchGuard’s Firebox firewalls is essential for maintaining network security and preventing potential breaches that could lead to data loss or service disruption.

Mitigation Steps:

  • Apply Firmware Updates
Update to the latest Firebox firmware provided by WatchGuard to patch the vulnerability promptly.

  • Disable Unnecessary Services
Turn off any services or features not in use that could be exploited through the vulnerability.

  • Implement Firewall Rules
Restrict access to the affected services to trusted IP addresses and block potential attack vectors.

  • Conduct Security Audits
Perform thorough vulnerability assessments to identify and address other security weaknesses.

  • Monitor System Logs
Enhance real-time monitoring to detect suspicious activity or attempts to exploit the vulnerability.

  • Prepare Incident Response
Develop or update incident response plans to swiftly combat potential exploitation efforts.

  • User and Staff Training
Educate personnel about the vulnerability and best practices to avoid social engineering exploits related to the issue.
