AI-Driven Cyber Threats Target Brazilian Hotels

TA558, a cybercriminal group, has unleashed a wave of attacks on hotels in Brazil, utilizing sophisticated methods to implant Venom RAT. Kaspersky, a Russian cybersecurity firm, tracks this group as RevengeHotels. Since summer 2025, the group has pivoted to using AI-generated scripts for enhanced phishing tactics. These phishing attacks often involve deceptive emails themed around invoices, prompting victims to click on malicious links. Consequently, this leads to the download of remote access trojans like Venom RAT via PowerShell downloaders.

The rise of artificial intelligence in cybercrime highlights a troubling trend. Cybercriminals are refining their tactics, leveraging advanced tools to infiltrate systems. Research shows that the initial malware code in these attacks bears characteristics typical of scripts generated by large language models. This capability enables attackers to craft more convincing phishing lures in various languages, notably Portuguese and Spanish.

Impacts and Evolving Techniques in Malware

Historically, RevengeHotels has targeted the hospitality sector since at least 2015. This group’s operations focus on securing sensitive information, particularly credit card data from guests and online booking systems like Booking.com. Recent campaigns reveal their adeptness in evolving malware strategies, utilizing tools designed for persistence and stealth during infiltration. For example, Venom RAT incorporates features that disrupt security measures on infected systems, ensuring the malware operates undetected.

Moreover, the Venom RAT includes anti-kill mechanisms that target processes used by security professionals. Such innovations underscore the necessity for improved cybersecurity measures within the hospitality industry. As cyber threats continue to grow in sophistication, understanding these developments becomes imperative.
