This group, involved in a campaign called Contagious Interview, dupes individuals on professional social media platforms like LinkedIn by posing as recruiters and then persuades targets to run malicious code through messaging apps like Telegram or Discord. The attackers aim to infiltrate developers’ systems to steal sensitive data and cryptocurrencies, aligning with North Korea’s dual objectives of espionage and financial theft. They integrate EtherHiding within smart contracts on blockchains such as Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain, creating resilient, anonymous, and easily modifiable backdoors that bypass law enforcement efforts. The malware delivery involves multiple stages, including JavaScript-based tools that exfiltrate wallet data and remote backdoors, ultimately enabling persistent control over high-value targets’ machines, particularly those holding cryptocurrencies like MetaMask or Phantom, and credentials stored in password managers. This new technique signifies an escalation in cyber threats, as nation-states harness blockchain technology for clandestine activities, making their attacks more resilient, harder to trace, and adaptable for future campaigns.

Cyber risks increasingly leverage advanced, covert methods like EtherHiding, which embeds malicious code within blockchain smart contracts, making malware distribution resilient to law enforcement takedowns and adaptable for ongoing campaigns. State-sponsored actors, such as North Korea-linked groups, exploit social engineering and blockchain technology to breach systems across Windows, macOS, and Linux—using multi-stage malware including npm packages, JavaScript stealers, and backdoors—to exfiltrate sensitive data, cryptocurrency wallets, and credentials.
