Cybercriminals Target Healthcare as Attacks Surge

Fast Facts

  1. Healthcare faced a significant surge in cyberattacks in early 2026, with a 14% increase overall and a 35% jump in healthcare-specific incidents compared to the previous half-year.
  2. Attackers increasingly target healthcare organizations via central hubs, compromising multiple entities and increasing ransom pressures.
  3. Ransomware attacks have led to disruptions such as hospital shutdowns, data breaches affecting millions, and heightened risks to patient safety.
  4. Healthcare providers remain vulnerable due to legacy devices and resource limitations, making them prime targets for financially motivated cybercriminals.

Cybercriminal Focus Shifts to Healthcare Providers

Recently, cybercriminals have increasingly targeted healthcare businesses. For example, attacks have surged 35% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. Major incidents include ransomware breaches at hospitals and health service companies, affecting millions of patients’ data. Attackers often see healthcare as a prime target because bypassing one provider can grant access to many hospitals. This puts added pressure on healthcare organizations to defend themselves and protect patient safety. Hospitals face the challenge of outdated devices and ongoing clinical work, making security a difficult task. Despite efforts, cybercriminals continue to exploit these vulnerabilities, knowing the potential for high payoffs through ransom demands and data theft.

Ransomware Attacks on the Rise Across All Sectors

The healthcare sector is just one part of a larger picture. Overall, ransomware attacks across various industries have increased by 11% in recent months. However, healthcare organizations and their vendors see the biggest jump — more than double the number of attacks compared to last year. These groups often target healthcare suppliers instead of hospitals directly, aiming to disrupt supply chains and gain ransom payments. This rise highlights cybersecurity’s importance in protecting critical services. Still, many healthcare providers struggle with outdated technology and limited resources to fully defend their networks. As a result, cybercriminals keep finding opportunities to attack, which can lead to delays in treatment, data loss, and even risk of life-threatening situations when systems go down.
