Essential Insights

  1. Threat actors are deploying webshells on compromised CMS sites, leading to potential service disruptions and data theft.
  2. Exploits target specific vulnerabilities in popular CMS plugins, enabling persistent attacker access.
  3. Attackers may leverage AI to scale their operations, increasing the threat intensity and complexity.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

A large-scale cyber campaign is targeting content management systems (CMS) around the world. Many Australian businesses have already been affected. The threat actors are scanning websites for vulnerabilities in popular CMS platforms such as WordPress, Craft CMS, MaxSite CMS, MetInfo CMS, and Joomla JCE. They are also looking for weaknesses in plugins like Simple File List, WavePlayer, Ninja Forms, and Craft CMS. When they find a vulnerability, they exploit it to install webshells. These webshells give attackers ongoing access to the website. The attackers can then cause disruptions, steal data, or move deeper into networks. They may also use artificial intelligence to make their attacks faster and more effective.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The cyber campaign can cause many problems. It might lead to website downtime, theft of sensitive data, or additional malware infections. These actions can harm business reputation and compromise user information. For security, organizations should urgently update all CMS components to the latest versions. Removing plugins that are not in use and enabling automatic updates can reduce risks. It is also important to strengthen security measures by making directories read-only and monitoring files for unauthorized changes. If these issues occur, organizations should contact their CMS vendors or relevant security authorities for detailed remediation steps.
