Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The new vulnerability, called Zapscape, affects Linux systems running KVM with nested virtualization enabled. It specifically targets the shadow memory management unit (MMU) used for nested guest memory translation. An attacker with kernel privileges inside an L1 guest virtual machine (VM) could exploit this flaw.

The attacker needs root access inside the guest VM. The flaw works on Intel systems that expose certain features, like EPT page-walk length 4 and 5. AMD systems are not affected by these conditions. The attack uses a technique called use-after-free related to KVM’s shadow-MMU bookkeeping. This allows the attacker to run commands on the host system with kernel or root privileges.

Kim, the researcher who found the bug, demonstrated an exploit path that can create a file called /Zapscape on the host. This shows the potential for malicious actions, but Kim said the exploit is not weaponized for immediate use in the wild. The attack needs specific conditions and knowledge to succeed.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The Zapscape vulnerability can allow a guest VM to escape its isolation and execute code on the host system. This could lead to complete control over the host, stealing data or causing disruptions. It mainly affects virtualized Linux servers with nested virtualization enabled and exposed to untrusted guests.

The security implications are serious. Administrators need to update their kernels or vendor packages that backport the fix. The upstream fix has been merged into the kernel, so installing fixed kernel versions or updates from vendors is highly recommended.

For remediation, organizations should consult their Linux vendor or security authority for specific patching steps. Red Hat, Debian, and other distributions have issued advisories, but the fix involves updating to specific kernel versions that include the patch. Kim’s detailed disclosure and the fix information are publicly available. Proper patching helps reduce the risk of exploitation and ensures system security.
