Essential Insights

  1. Nigeria experienced a 45% increase in weekly cyberattacks in August 2026, averaging 4,906 attacks per organization, making it one of Africa’s most targeted countries.
  2. Ransomware, phishing, and generative AI-driven data exfiltration pose escalating threats, particularly as AI tools are increasingly exploited to expose sensitive information.
  3. Critical sectors like Energy & Utilities, Education, and Government are highly targeted, risking operational disruptions and data breaches amid expanding cyberattack methods.

Threat Overview, Techniques, and Targets

Nigeria faces a sharp increase in cyber threats. On average, the country experiences 4,906 attacks each week in August 2026. This is a 45 percent rise compared to last year. Nigeria’s attacks are more than twice the global average of 2,422 attacks per organization weekly. Only Angola has higher attack rates, with 5,416 weekly attacks, followed by Nigeria. Kenya and South Africa have fewer attacks but still show increases.

The main attack techniques include ransomware, phishing, and threats that target artificial intelligence systems. The energy and utilities sector is the most targeted industry in Nigeria. Organizations that have many users, multiple access points, or valuable data are attractive targets for criminals. With the growth of artificial intelligence use, hackers also exploit generative AI to access confidential information. About one in every 43 prompts from enterprise AI systems could expose data.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The increase in cyberattacks impacts Nigeria’s businesses and government agencies. These attacks could disrupt operations, steal sensitive data, or cause financial losses. As threats grow, organizations must strengthen their security measures. Relying on scattered or basic security practices is not enough. Instead, organizations should adopt prevention-focused strategies. These should identify threats early and stop them before causing damage.

The presence of AI-related risks adds new challenges. Generative AI can be misused to leak data or create new attack routes. Therefore, organizations using AI should monitor AI activity closely and implement strong security controls.

If guidance is needed for improved security measures, organizations should consult with their security vendors or relevant authorities. They can help develop strategies that prevent attacks, detect threats early, and manage risks effectively.
