Quick Takeaways

  1. The FBI has removed an Accenture contractor due to a security breach linked to ShinyHunters, exposing thousands of FBI employee details.
  2. The breach was caused by a contractor failing to apply a critical security patch, leading to a third-party platform security failure.
  3. ShinyHunters exploited a CVE-2026-35273 vulnerability using URL-encoding to bypass web application firewall protections.
  4. The FBI’s investigation continues, with arrests of ShinyHunters members ongoing and potential for more actions.

FBI Takes Action After Security Lapse

The FBI recently removed an Accenture contractor following a security breach that compromised the personal data of thousands of bureau employees. This incident was linked to a failure in implementing a critical security update. The breach occurred after the contractor neglected to apply a security patch that was specifically issued to protect the platform. As a result, the FBI’s cyber division moved quickly to remove the contractor from their team. They also took steps to reduce any further risks and safeguard their workforce. Although the details of the third-party involved remain confidential, reports suggest it was Oracle’s PeopleSoft system, which hackers exploited to access the FBI’s portal.

Impact of the Breach and Ongoing Investigation

The breach involved the hacking group ShinyHunters, known for exploiting vulnerabilities such as CVE-2026-35273. They used a special URL-encoding trick to bypass security defenses like web application firewalls. This attack targeted the Environment Management Hub (PSEMHUB) endpoint, which was vulnerable due to outdated security measures. As investigations continue, authorities have already arrested two members connected to ShinyHunters. The FBI emphasizes that they are working with partners to gather more evidence. They also warn that more arrests could happen as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, Accenture expressed continued support for the FBI’s mission and commitment to cybersecurity.
