Summary Points

  1. LiteLLM 1.107.0 was compromised on October 21 and briefly published to PyPI and Docker registries; installs during the stated exposure windows may be affected.
  2. The malicious package stole secrets across systems, browsers, cloud and developer tools, and could fetch and execute remote code hourly.
  3. Stolen AWS credentials were tested and abused, including activity consistent with unauthorized access to cloud AI models.
  4. If 1.107.0 was installed, isolate affected hosts, remove it, rotate all accessible credentials, investigate for backdoor activity, and rebuild.

Compromised release targeted developer credentials

LiteLLM says attackers compromised its release process on October 21 and published a malicious version of its AI gateway software. The release, version 1.107.0, appeared on Python Package Index and Docker registries.

The altered package stole credentials and could run code downloaded from a remote server. LiteLLM suspects attackers gained access to GitHub login tokens through its internal logs. The company says some AI coding tool responses may include those tokens, which can then appear in logs. Investigators have not confirmed how attackers accessed the internal system.

Users who installed an unpinned Python version during the affected period, or used the listed Docker tags, may face risk. Security researchers also observed attempts to test stolen cloud credentials and check access to AI models.

Users urged to replace credentials and check systems

LiteLLM advises affected users to isolate impacted machines, remove version 1.107.0, rotate accessible credentials, and investigate signs of the malware. Teams should also check whether suspicious code ran on their systems.

AI gateways help businesses connect applications to different AI models, making them practical tools as adoption grows. However, this incident shows how a compromised software release can put cloud accounts and AI services at risk. Careful version checks and secure release controls can help protect the people and organizations that rely on these tools.
