Europe’s Freezer Hacks Go Viral

Summary Points

  1. ~700 French supermarkets suffered refrigerator and freezer disruptions, causing millions of euros in losses, spoiled food, equipment damage, and reported fires.
  2. Shared, internet-exposed OT systems—some using default credentials and outdated firmware—may have let attackers reuse the same access methods across retailers.
  3. Similar attacks spread to multiple European countries and targeted French blood-bank refrigeration, underscoring the real-world risks to supply chains.
  4. Reduce exposure: change default passwords, restrict remote access, update or replace legacy systems, and validate commands against safe operating limits.

Why Europe’s Freezer Hacks Spread So Far, So Fast

One Weakness, Many Stores

On Oct. 11, an unknown attacker reportedly changed refrigeration controls at about 700 French supermarkets. The systems then ran extended defrost cycles, spoiling food, damaging equipment and reportedly starting fires. The damage reached millions of euros.

Investigators have not confirmed how the attacker got in. However, some internet-connected controllers used default login details, while other systems ran outdated software. Similar equipment and remote-access setups operate across many retailers. As a result, attackers could reuse the same methods at stores that shared those weaknesses.

Small Systems, Real-World Costs

The disruption spread beyond France. In November, similar attacks affected stores in several European countries. Attackers also targeted refrigeration at three French blood banks, but staff stopped the incident before it damaged plasma.

Freezers may seem less critical than power plants or hospitals. Yet supermarkets rely on many small, often unattended systems to keep food safe. When those systems fail, shoppers, workers and suppliers feel the effects quickly.

Retailers can reduce the risk by replacing default passwords, limiting internet access and updating equipment where possible. However, older systems may no longer receive updates, and maintenance can require costly downtime. These incidents show how closely daily life depends on essential technology—and why securing it matters across the supply chain.
