Fast Facts

  1. The cybercrime group BlackFile (UNC6671) is actively targeting large organizations across multiple sectors, primarily using voice-phishing and social engineering to gain initial access.
  2. They frequently demand extortion payments starting around $3 million, often negotiated down to below $1 million, and use threats including threatening messages and swatting.
  3. BlackFile’s persistent activity averages 1.5 new victims daily, with their infrastructure supporting multiple brands and shared tools, emphasizing the ongoing human-focused vulnerability.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The cybercrime group BlackFile is active and has recently targeted various organizations. The group is known for attacking private equity firms, law firms, and financial rating agencies. Researchers also see it moving to new sectors like healthcare and technology. BlackFile mainly uses voice-phishing methods. They pretend to be IT support staff to trick people and gain access. This group is split into four brands: Redact, Pink, Helix, and Falcon, which use shared infrastructure. Recently, organizations received extortion demands from Redact. BlackFile targets large organizations, not small ones. They often ask for extortion payments starting at $3 million. In many cases, payments are negotiated down to less than $1 million. The group also focuses on financial firms such as Blackstone, Bain Capital, Moody’s, CME, and Apollo, but it is unclear if they were compromised. BlackFile runs a steady operation, attacking about 1.5 new victims each day.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

BlackFile’s attacks cause serious concern for affected organizations. They use social engineering to steal data and threaten victims to pay ransom. Some victims have received threatening messages and experienced incidents like swatting. These threats can escalate and cause physical harm or reputational damage. The attack methods are current but not highly advanced. This shows the importance of security awareness training. Organizations should strengthen their defenses against voice phishing and social engineering attacks. If your organization is targeted or compromised, it is best to consult with cybersecurity vendors or authorities. They can offer specific remediation steps to address the threat and reduce future risks.
