China-linked OP-512 targets IIS servers with new cluster

Quick Takeaways

  1. OP-512 employs custom web shells and timestomping techniques to evade detection on legacy IIS servers targeted for espionage.
  2. The group utilizes privilege escalation tools like Potato Suite to gain SYSTEM-level access, increasing control over compromised systems.
  3. Its sophisticated, bespoke tooling is designed to bypass traditional defenses, posing a significant challenge for signature-based detection methods.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The OP-512 threat cluster targets Microsoft IIS servers. Researchers believe it is linked to China and focus on espionage. This group has been active for about a year and is the fourth similar group targeting IIS servers. OP-512 uses a custom web shell framework with three different web shells. These web shells offer remote access and are designed to avoid detection. The attackers use timestomping, which changes file timestamps to hide their activities. Their tools are unique and include automated reporting. The attackers mainly target older IIS servers, such as those running Windows Server 2016 with outdated software. They drop a web shell through the server’s worker process, which then reports its location to a domain controlled by the attackers. The group also tries to escalate privileges to the SYSTEM level using a tool called the Potato Suite.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

This activity could lead to serious security issues. The attackers might steal sensitive information or cause disruptions. Since the tools are sophisticated, they can bypass many current defenses. This creates a significant risk for organizations that rely on signature-based detection methods. To reduce these risks, organizations should review their IIS server configurations. Keeping software updated and applying the latest security patches is critical. If there is suspicion of compromise, organizations should contact their security vendors or trusted authorities. Accurate remediation steps should be obtained from these sources to properly address the threat.
