Quick Takeaways

  1. An exposed Alibaba Cloud server revealed a China-linked cyber operation, JadeProx, targeting Asian and Latin American institutions with a sophisticated Windows loader called TriBack Loader.
  2. The operation used four infection chains involving DLL sideloading, with some variants delivering the backdoor framework AdaptixC2 and others employing different payloads, demonstrating advanced loader customization.
  3. Campaigns included spear-phishing impersonations, such as a fake Claude software site, and leveraged stolen certificates and URL clusters to evade detection and persist in targeted networks.
  4. Detection hinges on identifying the sideloading chain, signed binaries, unexpected DLLs, and suspicious domains, emphasizing the importance of monitoring file layouts and suspicious network activity for early threat identification.

China-Nexus Uses Advanced Loader in Targeted Attacks

Recently, a security breach revealed new insights into China-linked cyber operations. An exposed Alibaba Cloud server showed a widespread campaign targeting government, healthcare, and education sectors across Asia and Latin America. The attack involved a new Windows loader named TriBack Loader, which had not been seen before. Researchers found this malware on an Alibaba Cloud server in Singapore before it was taken offline. The attackers used webshells on exposed Java interfaces to access vital systems, like hospitals and government offices. These activities highlight how sophisticated attackers are becoming, with plans to penetrate critical infrastructure worldwide.

The New Loader’s Technical Strategy and Widespread Impact

TriBack Loader functions through four different infection methods, all based on DLL sideloading. Most of these builds combine legitimate signed files with malicious code to dodge security tools. The malware can encrypt payloads, reverse bytes, and hide its activity through various technical tricks. Different versions of the loader used various techniques to establish persistence and run backdoors, like the open-source AdaptixC2 framework. Attackers also used phishing emails that mimicked legitimate companies, including a fake site impersonating a well-known AI platform. This campaign not only showcases technical innovation but also emphasizes the potential for widespread harm, especially if such malware spreads further. Detection can start by examining suspicious file signatures or unusual directory activity, making it crucial for organizations to strengthen their defenses against such complex threats.
