They exploited this access to conduct network reconnaissance, deploy a VPN-like covert channel, and target IT personnel to steal credentials—enabling further infiltration into the organization’s internal systems. This sophisticated operation demonstrates how trusted software tools can be exploited by hackers to bypass security measures and hide malicious activities, posing a serious threat to network security.

The report, provided by cybersecurity firm ReliaQuest and shared with The Hacker News, indicates that the hackers’ goal was to establish deep, undetectable access that could be maintained over time. By creating a backdoor through a disguised web shell and a hidden VPN connection, the attackers could remotely control parts of the network and possibly conduct data exfiltration. The incident highlights the increasing danger of cybercriminals using legitimate tools for malicious purposes, making detection more difficult and emphasizing the need for organizations to scrutinize even trusted software and processes for signs of compromise.
