Threat Details, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Google has released a security update to fix a vulnerability in Chrome’s V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine. The flaw, identified as CVE-2026-87491, is an out-of-bounds bug. It has been actively exploited in the wild. The vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code within the Chrome sandbox. The attack involves delivering a crafted HTML page that exploits the bug. Security researcher Jihyeon Jeong discovered and reported the flaw. The attacker’s goal is to remotely run malicious code on affected systems. Google has not disclosed who is behind the attacks or how they are weaponizing the vulnerability. The targeted users are Chrome users, but other Chromium-based browsers are also at risk.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation

This vulnerability has serious security implications. It can enable remote code execution, leading to potential compromise of affected systems. Attackers could install malware, steal data, or control the system remotely. Google confirmed that an exploit exists in the wild. Consequently, users should update their Chrome browser immediately. Google recommends updating to version 153.0.8010.36, 153.0.8010.37 for Windows and macOS, and 153.0.8010.36 for Linux. Following the update, users should restart Chrome to apply the fix. For other Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi, updates are also advised when available. If you need detailed remediation guidance, consult the relevant vendor or security authority.
