Essential Insights

  1. A high-severity DoS vulnerability (CVE-2026-28318) in SolarWinds Serv-U allows attackers to crash the service remotely via specially crafted POST requests, leading to potential disruption.
  2. The flaw is actively exploited, with evidence of ongoing attacks, increasing risk for exposed Serv-U servers, especially since the service can be crashed without authentication.
  3. Mitigation requires updating to version 15.5.4 HF1, limiting access, and blocking requests with "content-encoding" to prevent exploitation.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added a dangerous security flaw to its KEV catalog. This flaw impacts SolarWinds Serv-U, a multi-protocol file server software. The bug is called CVE-2026-28318 and has a high severity score of 7.5. It causes the Serv-U service to crash under certain conditions. Attackers can exploit this flaw by sending special POST requests that cause the software to stop working. They do not need to authenticate first. These malicious requests use “Content-Encoding: deflate” to crash the service. The flaw makes the system unusable by overwhelming its resources. So far, there are no reports of real-world attacks or known threat groups exploiting this bug. It is also unknown how many Serv-U servers are affected or exposed on the internet.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

This vulnerability can lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. When exploited, it causes Serv-U to crash, making it unavailable. This could disrupt business services and cause data access issues. Because of the active exploitation, organizations using Serv-U are at risk. The security implication is that attackers can cause service disruptions easily. To fix this, SolarWinds released version 15.5.4 HF1, which addresses the flaw. As a mitigation, it is recommended to limit access to known addresses and block any requests containing “content-encoding,” since the vulnerable service does not need this feature. If you use Serv-U, it is important to update to the latest version. For detailed remediation steps, organizations should consult the official vendor guidance or relevant authority.
