Essential Insights

  1. Attackers can remotely execute arbitrary code in Microsoft SharePoint Server via CVE-2026-58644, exploiting a critical deserialization flaw with low complexity and no prior knowledge needed.
  2. The vulnerability has already been weaponized in the wild before patches were released, enabling threat actors to potentially steal credentials, deploy malware, and gain persistent access.
  3. Active exploitation of multiple SharePoint vulnerabilities, including CVE-2026-58644, poses a significant risk of unauthorized remote access, data exfiltration, and post-exploitation activities within affected environments.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The threat involves a critical vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint Server, identified as CVE-2026-58644. This is a deserialization flaw with a high CVSS score of 9.8. Attackers can exploit this flaw remotely over the internet. They need only low attack complexity and do not require much prior knowledge. Once exploited, the attacker can run arbitrary code on the server. The vulnerability affects several SharePoint versions, including SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, 2019, and 2016. Attackers already weaponized this flaw before patches were available, increasing the risk of active exploitation. The attack can be carried out by an attacker with at least site owner access, who can then inject and execute malicious code remotely on the SharePoint server.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The exploitation of CVE-2026-58644 can lead to severe consequences. Attackers could take control of the SharePoint server, potentially stealing sensitive data or deploying malware. They may also use these exploits for further activities, such as gaining persistent access or stealing machine keys. Because these vulnerabilities are actively exploited, organizations face significant security risks.

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends applying the latest security patches and updates from Microsoft immediately. Verifying successful patch installation, enabling AMSI for SharePoint applications, and monitoring logs for malicious activities are crucial steps. It is also advised to restrict external access and review server security hardening guidance provided by Microsoft. If you need detailed remediation steps, they should be obtained directly from Microsoft or the relevant security authorities.
