Is AI the Solution to Your Overburdened Security Team?

  1. Security teams are stretched thin, dedicating 13-15 hours weekly across nine key tasks, without any task taking clear priority, leading to reactive work dominating.
  2. Hiring and training help but are slow to close the skills gap, which is widening and increasingly critical, leaving teams overwhelmed by persistent workloads.
  3. AI and automation can speed processes like alert triage and correlation but often redistribute workload rather than reduce it unless workflows are fundamentally restructured.
  4. Managed security services, especially MDR, provide faster, more scalable capacity with continuous expertise, helping teams regain hours and improve security posture more efficiently than building in-house capabilities.

Addressing Overwhelmed Security Teams with AI

Many security teams face a common challenge: they are stretched thin. Each team member spends about 13 to 15 hours a week on nine different tasks. This workload is like having three full-time staff members working nonstop. However, when new threats appear unexpectedly, teams struggle even more. They often focus on reactive work, leaving important proactive tasks behind.

AI offers a way to change this. By automating repeatable and high-volume tasks, AI can free up analyst time. For example, AI can handle over 60% of investigations without human help, solving routine issues in seconds instead of hours. But AI alone isn’t enough. Implementing it requires redesigning workflows, adjusting security controls, and updating data management. Without these changes, AI might just shuffle work around rather than reduce it.

Furthermore, AI empowers teams to respond faster and more efficiently. Incident detection and alert triage improve dramatically, especially outside normal working hours. Yet, human oversight remains essential. Human experts bring judgment, context, and accountability—qualities AI cannot replace. When AI works alongside skilled analysts, it enhances security without replacing the human touch.

Building Practical Security Strategies in a Tight Labor Market

Hiring new staff is a common approach to close the skills gap. It does add more capacity, especially when new hires bring deep expertise. However, it takes time to find, hire, and train new team members. During that wait, existing tasks remain, and the workload continues to grow. According to recent insights, most teams find the skills shortage critical and experience real consequences from gaps in talent.

Because of this, many organizations are turning to managed security services. Outsourcing security operations can be faster and more effective than hiring. These services bring established expertise and technology that are already in place, reducing the waiting period and immediate workload. They operate alongside existing teams, helping prioritize and respond to threats promptly.

This model also maintains accountability and knowledge retention. For example, managed detection and response (MDR) services provide continuous monitoring, incident handling, and threat hunting. They leverage AI-driven tools combined with human experts to act swiftly and accurately. This partnership enables internal teams to focus on strategic decisions, risk management, and understanding their organization’s unique needs.

Encouragingly, many security leaders recognize that building capabilities through hiring and training works over the long run, but it cannot replace the immediate relief that managed services provide. When teams partner with trusted providers, they gain extra hours, reduce burnout, and strengthen their defenses—all crucial for navigating today’s complex cyber landscape.
