Old Vulnerabilities, New AI Threats

Top Highlights

  1. Microsoft patched a serious CVE-2026-26144 XSS vulnerability in Excel that exploits the Copilot AI agent to silently exfiltrate data without user interaction.
  2. This attack introduces a new concept called "privilege amplification," where AI agents inherit application privileges, turning vulnerabilities into much more damaging exploits.
  3. Traditional vulnerability classifications and risk models are insufficient for AI-integrated applications, requiring reassessment of security priorities and defenses.
  4. While CVE-2026-26144 is patched, the fundamental challenge remains: any application embedding AI agents must re-evaluate their security architecture to prevent AI-enabled data exfiltration and privilege abuse.

Old Vulnerabilities Take on New Power with AI

Traditional security flaws, like the cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability found in Excel, are not gone. Instead, they now have a new dimension. When hackers exploit these flaws, they can now trigger AI agents embedded in applications. For example, an attacker inserts malicious code into an Excel file. When the file is opened, the AI—such as a Copilot assistant—acts on the malicious script without any user clicking or noticing. This process can silently send data to hackers, making the attack more dangerous than before. Experts warn that such AI-enabled attacks will become more common. Unlike past exploits, these breaches now have a much wider impact because AI can take independent action. This shift makes understanding vulnerabilities more complex, as AI can magnify the damage.

What Organizations Should Do Beyond JustPatching

While fixing vulnerabilities like CVE-2026-26144 with patches is necessary, it is not enough. Every application that uses AI agents presents new risks. For instance, restricting network access for AI tools is an easy way to limit damage. Blocking outbound traffic from AI-enabled software prevents data theft through hidden requests. Additionally, organizations should monitor AI-initiated network activity. If an Excel process makes requests to unknown servers, that raises suspicion. Also, reevaluating permission settings for AI assistants is crucial. These tools often have broad access, and if a system is compromised, the AI can perform serious damage. A fresh approach to security must include updating threat models and prioritizing AI-related risks, not just traditional flaws. Recognizing this trend helps security teams stay ahead in an era where old vulnerabilities now act with AI’s new capabilities.
