Essential Insights

  1. Critical PHP flaws: CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 enable unauthenticated remote code execution across affected PHP 7.x and 8.x releases.
  2. Exploitation is underway: Amazon and other security teams detected probes and varied attacks from anonymized infrastructure, beginning before or shortly after disclosure.
  3. Compromise can be hard to spot: Exploits may leave few useful application logs, putting servers, databases, and sensitive data at risk.
  4. Patch urgently: Update PHP, inventory embedded and legacy deployments, and monitor for suspicious processes—millions of internet-facing services may be exposed.

Probe Came Before Public Disclosure

A security honeypot detected an attempt to exploit two serious PHP flaws on October 17, four days before the vulnerabilities became public. A honeypot acts as a decoy server, designed to attract and record suspicious activity.

Amazon, which runs the honeypot, said the request came from an address linked to an anonymizing service and appeared to be a threat actor’s probe. The company described it as largely a one-off attempt. However, investigators do not know how the actor learned about the flaws before disclosure.

The vulnerabilities, tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, affect PHP’s core software. They could let an attacker run code on a vulnerable server without signing in. The PHP Foundation moved its disclosure forward after technical details and a demonstration exploit leaked.

Millions of Services Face Patch Pressure

After the fixes became public, security teams recorded further attempts, including probes from several anonymized addresses. That activity suggests more than one attacker may be trying to exploit the flaws.

The risk reaches beyond one website platform. PHP supports a large share of websites, and the flaws affect the PHP runtime itself. As a result, sites using different content systems and applications may still face exposure. Older, unsupported PHP versions add to the challenge because many organizations must first identify where they use PHP before they can plan updates.

For website owners, the practical priority is to find every affected service and install the available fixes. Security teams should also watch for unusual server activity. These steps matter because websites support everyday tasks, from shopping to accessing information. Keeping their underlying software updated helps protect both the services people rely on and the data they share.
