Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Threat actors are exploiting a high-severity vulnerability in Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS, known as CVE-2026-0257. This vulnerability is an authentication bypass flaw. It affects the portal and gateway components of PAN-OS software. Attackers use this flaw to gain unauthorized access to networks. They do this by sidestepping authentication and opening VPN sessions without needing valid credentials. They do this when authentication override cookies are enabled with specific certificates.

Once inside, attackers deploy ransomware, specifically Qilin or Agenda. They stage the ransomware in a specific folder called C:\PerfLogs\ and use tools like PsExec to move laterally across systems. They also clear logs and disable security features like Microsoft Defender to avoid detection. This activity often leads to encryption of data or credential theft. The targets are mainly organizations with vulnerable PAN-OS systems.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The exploitation of this vulnerability can cause serious damage. Attackers may encrypt entire networks or steal sensitive information. They can also move within the network to access more resources. The activity makes organizations vulnerable to data loss, operational disruption, and potential financial damage.

Because the attackers take steps to hide their actions, identifying the attack early can be difficult. They clear logs and disable defenses, which makes detection harder. To reduce risk, organizations should install patches from the vendor. They should also review network security settings, especially around VPN and authentication.

If organizations find themselves affected or suspect an attack, they should contact the vendor or cybersecurity authorities for further guidance. Remediation steps should be based on official advice from Palo Alto Networks or cybersecurity experts.
