Summary Points

  1. State-Sponsored Attack: SonicWall confirmed that a September security breach, exposing firewall configuration backup files, was orchestrated by state-sponsored threat actors.

  2. Minimal Impact: The breach affected less than 5% of customers utilizing the cloud backup service and was isolated to that environment via an API call.

  3. No Harm to Systems: The incident did not compromise SonicWall’s products, firmware, or other systems; the company engaged Mandiant for a thorough investigation.

  4. Customer Action Required: SonicWall urges customers to check their devices on MySonicWall.com, reset credentials as necessary, and utilize new security tools for remediation.

SonicWall Identifies State-Sponsored Hackers in Security Breach

SonicWall has confirmed that state-sponsored hackers orchestrated a significant security breach in September. The company revealed that unauthorized access occurred, compromising firewall configuration backup files stored in the cloud. This breach specifically involved an API call, allowing the intruders to access sensitive data related to less than 5% of its customer base.

Transitioning from initial speculation, SonicWall clarified that this incident does not relate to the ongoing Akira ransomware attacks affecting edge devices. Notably, the breach only targeted a specific cloud environment. SonicWall assured its customers that it detected the intrusion rapidly and responded effectively.

Investigation and Customer Guidance Follow the Breach

Following the incident, SonicWall enlisted Mandiant, a Google subsidiary, to conduct an in-depth investigation. Fortunately, the breach did not impact other systems or products, enabling SonicWall to focus on repairing and strengthening its cloud infrastructure. The company has implemented various security measures based on Mandiant’s recommendations to bolster its defenses.

To assist affected customers, SonicWall encouraged logging into MySonicWall.com to check device status. Additionally, the company released tools aimed at identifying affected services and resetting credentials. As cyber threats evolve, companies like SonicWall face increased scrutiny, yet they remain committed to enhancing security for their customers and partners.
