The CISO’s New Front Line: Securing the Agentic Era

  1. Enterprise AI agents surged—15× year over year in Microsoft 365—creating new security and governance risks.
  2. Builders should give agents governed identities, limit data access, and involve security teams early.
  3. CISOs need clear guardrails and visibility into each agent’s owner, access, and behavior.
  4. AI-enabled threats demand integrated security signals, threat intelligence, and agents that help defenders respond faster.

Make Safe Building Part of Daily Work

AI agents now appear across ordinary business tasks, from summarizing files to updating applications. Their rapid growth makes one point clear: security cannot wait for a project’s final review. Builders should involve security teams early. Together, they can decide what information an agent may access and what actions it may take.

Each agent should have its own managed identity, not a person’s password or a shared account. That lets IT teams trace activity and disable access quickly. Just as important, teams should limit each agent to the data and systems it needs. These steps do not block useful work. Instead, clear guardrails help employees experiment without creating hidden paths into company systems.

Connect Defense to the Speed of Change

Meanwhile, attackers use AI to work faster. Security teams must connect signals from accounts, devices, applications, and cloud services. A warning in one system may seem minor; combined with other clues, it may reveal an active attack.

In day-to-day operations, CISOs should know which agents exist, who owns them, what they can reach, and how their behavior changes. Security tools and trained partners can help teams spot patterns sooner. Agents can also assist analysts with routine investigation, while people make the critical decisions.

Adoption will vary by organization. Yet the direction is clear: businesses need room to innovate and firm control over access, data, and response. The CISO’s role now reaches beyond protecting technology. It includes helping the whole enterprise use AI with care—and strengthening the habits that make security everyone’s work.
