Essential Insights

  1. Unsecured cloud and SaaS platforms are unknowingly funding violent crimes, exploitation, and organized cybercriminal groups like The Com.
  2. The Com is a decentralized ecosystem involved in cyberattacks, physical violence, and supporting heinous crimes such as child exploitation, with members often overlapping across different criminal subsets.
  3. These groups recruit young members from gaming and social media, grooming and coercing victims into participating in violence and illegal activities, creating a dangerous cycle.
  4. Despite a recent lull, The Com remains active with evolving tactics, including deploying physical assets for crimes, reinforcing the need for better cybersecurity and societal oversight.

The Link Between Cybercrimes and Violence

Recent investigations reveal that cybercriminal groups, such as one known as The Com, are involved in more than just hacking. They also support violence and exploitation, especially of minors. When organizations neglect to secure their cloud and SaaS platforms, they unintentionally fund these illegal acts. Cybercriminal groups, often based in North America and recruiting from gaming and social media communities, mix hacking with physical violence and sex crimes. Experts warn that many of these groups overlap, making it hard for authorities to fight them effectively. As a result, young people involved in these groups can become radicalized, drifting deeper into a world of pain and crime.

How Crime Groups Support Harmful Activities

The Com operates in various ways that blur the lines between different crimes. Their hacker team, called “Hacker Com,” conducts cyberattacks on large companies, but they also participate in crimes like fraud, extortion, and physical attacks. These groups often work together and share goals, making them more dangerous. For example, some members use sextortion and grooming to recruit children into crimes, turning victims into offenders. The money they earn from cybercrimes fuels other illegal activities, including physical assaults and child exploitation. Although officials investigate these crimes separately, experts say that these different parts of The Com are tightly connected. This makes fighting them more complicated and risky for society.
