Underground AI Models Could Turn Hackers’ ‘Cyber Pentesting Waifu’ Into a Threat

The Issue

Recently, cybercriminals are increasingly utilizing sophisticated AI tools from underground markets, as detailed in a report by Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42. These AI hacking programs, sold on dark web forums, are either jailbroken or open-source, and are advertised as tools for both malicious hacking and legitimate cybersecurity testing. The hackers use these models to automate tasks such as vulnerability scanning, data encryption, and code writing, which lowers the technical barrier for cybercriminals. For instance, WormGPT, a jailbroken language model, reappeared with new abilities to assist cybercrime and offered subscription-based access at affordable prices. Similarly, KawaiiGPT, a casual, easy-to-setup AI tool, provides malicious functions and is supported by a community of developers, making dangerous hacking capabilities more accessible.

The report reveals that these developments are driven by commercial strategies, making malicious AI tools less reliant on free, unreliable models. While these tools can generate malware quickly, Palo Alto’s tests show much of their code is detectable and less advanced than real-world cyberattacks. Nonetheless, Andy Piazza from Unit 42 warns that the main threat lies in reducing the skill threshold needed for hacking; users can simply ask AI tools for attack scripts without needing in-depth technical knowledge. This shift risks making cyberattacks more widespread and easier to execute, posing a significant challenge for cybersecurity professionals worldwide.
