ViewState Deserialization Attack Exploiting Knowledge Delivery Systems

Quick Takeaways

  1. Attackers can craft malicious ViewState payloads using known machine keys to execute code through deserialization vulnerabilities.
  2. Threat actors deploy in-memory web shells like BLUEBEAM for persistent, fileless control of compromised servers.
  3. Unauthorized file tampering, such as JS modifications and permission escalations, enables remote script loading and further exploitation.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

The threat involves exploiting a vulnerability in ASP.NET’s ViewState feature. Attackers can craft malicious ViewState payloads if they know the machineKey. They send this payload through the __VIEWSTATE parameter in HTTP requests. Once received, the server deserializes the malicious data. This method follows a pattern similar to a known ViewState Deserialization Zero-Day vulnerability affecting Sitecore and code injection attacks using publicly disclosed ASP.NET machine keys. It is important because a known machineKey makes it easier for attackers to create harmful payloads. The targets are web applications powered by ASP.NET that use ViewState to maintain page state. Attackers mainly focus on servers accepting and processing __VIEWSTATE parameter data.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

Exploitation can lead to serious consequences. Attackers might deploy a web shell, such as BLUEBEAM, inside the server memory. This allows them to run commands or upload additional malicious payloads without detection. They can also tamper with files on the server, like JavaScript files, to show fake security alerts or load remote malicious scripts. Furthermore, infected servers can lead to client malware infections, such as Cobalt Strike BEACON backdoors, which target user workstations. The security implications include remote code execution, unauthorized access, data theft, and persistence for threat actors. To mitigate these risks, organizations should rotate machine keys to make old keys invalid. Limiting access to known IP ranges can also help. Conducting thorough investigations of any suspicious activity is essential. For detailed remediation steps, it is advised to consult the relevant vendor or security authority.
