Why Resilient OT Is Critical for Today’s Boards

  1. Traditional OT security "air gaps" are obsolete; interconnected IoT devices and exposure to the internet significantly increase risks.
  2. Modern threats exploit basic vulnerabilities and target reporting interfaces, making physical disruption achievable without sophisticated attacks.
  3. Zero Trust principles—continuous verification, least privilege, and breach assumption—are essential for securing complex, interconnected industrial environments.
  4. Effective cyber resilience entails asset visibility, micro-segmentation, adaptive design for degraded states, and strategic risk management at the board level.

Bringing OT Resilience into Everyday IT Operations

In today’s connected world, operational technology (OT) is no longer isolated from enterprise IT. Historically, many believed that physical separation protected critical infrastructure. However, this “air gap” no longer guarantees safety. As companies adopt real-time data, cloud platforms, and automation, OT assets become exposed and more vulnerable. This shift makes OT resilience a day-to-day concern for IT teams, not just a long-term strategic goal.
For example, when enterprise IT faces a breach, companies often shut down operations manually to avoid bigger damage. This shows how deeply connected these systems are now. From operations at a factory to managing a power grid, software, sensors, and networks work together in real time. This connected environment requires IT professionals to rethink security. They must verify every device and user, limit access to only what’s necessary, and assume breaches can happen at any moment. These practices create a safer operational environment. Making resilience part of everyday IT tasks helps prevent disruptions, protect physical assets, and uphold safety. It fosters a proactive approach, rather than waiting for a disaster to occur before acting.
Integrating tools like continuous asset discovery, virtual patching, and network segmentation becomes essential. These strategies help identify vulnerabilities, patch unpatchable systems, and isolate issues quickly. When the unexpected happens, resilient systems allow operations to continue safely or revert to safe modes without long delays. Clear procedures, regular testing, and good communication between IT and operations teams are crucial. This way, resilience becomes embedded into the company’s routine, supporting ongoing safety and efficiency in a highly interconnected environment.

Making Resilience a Strategic Boardroom Priority

For a modern business, security is no longer just an IT concern. Today, operational technologies power essential services like energy, manufacturing, and water systems. If these systems fail or are attacked, the impacts go beyond inconvenience—they threaten safety, environment, and business continuity. Therefore, boardrooms must see OT resilience as a strategic priority.
Boards need to ask tough questions: Do we know all our assets? How quickly can we detect and respond to threats? Are we prepared to isolate and contain issues without halting operations completely? To answer these, organizations should develop comprehensive visibility into all physical and digital assets. Maintaining a real-time inventory eliminates dangerous blind spots.
Moreover, security must be built into the design of modernization projects from the start. Virtual patching and micro-segmentation work together to protect legacy systems and segment networks, reducing the attack surface. Companies should also plan for degraded modes, so that critical functions stay operational even if external connections break down. Practicing operational recovery through simulations helps teams respond swiftly in real crises.
Leadership plays a vital role in unifying these efforts. By aligning risk management with safety and operational goals, executives can foster a culture of resilience. As regulations tighten and cyber threats evolve, adopting these strategic actions ensures organizations stay secure. Resilience is no longer optional; it becomes a key driver for sustained success in today’s digital and physical landscape.
