Summary Points

  1. Authentication Bypass Fixed: Click Studios released a critical update for Passwordstate (version 9.9) addressing an authentication bypass vulnerability on the Emergency Access page.

  2. Enhanced Security Measures: The new version includes improved protections against clickjacking attacks, responding to vulnerabilities identified by security researcher Marek Tóth.

  3. Widespread Use: Passwordstate is utilized by 29,000 customers, including global enterprises, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies, highlighting its significance in enterprise security.

  4. Historical Context: This disclosure follows previous security incidents, including a significant supply chain breach over four years ago and multiple security flaws resolved in late 2022.

Click Studios Addresses Critical Security Issue

Click Studios, the Australian developer of Passwordstate, has announced a crucial security update for its enterprise password management solution. On August 28, 2025, the company released Passwordstate version 9.9 (Build 9972) to address a high-severity authentication bypass vulnerability. This flaw allowed attackers to exploit the Emergency Access page with carefully crafted URLs. Although the issue has not yet received a CVE identifier, the prompt patching reflects the company’s commitment to user security.

Additionally, the new update includes enhancements to protect against clickjacking attacks targeting its browser extension. Security researcher Marek Tóth highlighted the risk of Document Object Model (DOM)-based clickjacking, which could potentially enable attackers to steal users’ sensitive data. With around 29,000 customers, including Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, Passwordstate plays a vital role in enterprise security management.

Learning from Past Breaches

This vulnerability disclosure follows a history of security challenges for Click Studios. In recent years, the company faced a significant supply chain breach that compromised its software update mechanism. Hackers used this vulnerability to introduce malware, jeopardizing sensitive information. In December 2022, Click Studios also resolved critical authentication flaws, emphasizing the importance of ongoing vigilance in cybersecurity.

Given the array of professionals relying on Passwordstate, the latest updates demonstrate Click Studios’ proactive approach to safeguarding user data. The enhancements likely contribute to broader industry discussions around password management security. As digital threats evolve, such developments play an essential role in enhancing protection for both individuals and organizations.
