Essential Insights

  1. Attackers exploit trusted OAuth connections in Salesforce, often through social engineering, to gain undetected access without exploiting platform flaws.
  2. They utilize compromised third-party vendor tokens and misconfigured guest access to infiltrate and extract data from multiple organizations seamlessly.
  3. Microsoft and Salesforce have introduced detection and governance tools, including real-time event monitoring and risk scoring, to identify abnormal OAuth activity.
  4. Effective defense requires inventorying, minimizing, and securing connected apps, rotating tokens, and reinforcing identity controls beyond traditional user authentication methods.

Microsoft Identifies Three Main Pathways for Salesforce Attacks

Over the past year, attackers associated with the ShinyHunters group have found ways to breach Salesforce environments without exploiting platform flaws. Instead, they relied heavily on trusted connections, especially OAuth integrations. Microsoft’s recent analysis maps out three primary methods: vishing calls trick employees into granting access, stolen tokens from compromised third-party vendors, and misconfigured guest access to Salesforce sites. These tactics, observed in various industries like retail and education, show how attackers manipulate human trust and overlooked security gaps to gain entry. This understanding highlights the importance for organizations to strengthen their defenses beyond standard login protections.

What Companies Can Do to Improve Security

In response, Microsoft and Salesforce have introduced new tools to detect and prevent such attacks. One key step is monitoring what happens after access is granted—tracking the activities of connected apps and OAuth scopes. For example, organizations should regularly review their connected apps, remove those that are inactive, and restrict permissions to the least necessary. Additionally, they should tighten guest-user access and ensure that all logins are closely watched using enhanced logging features. These measures aim to close the gaps that allow attackers to move freely once inside. Ultimately, organizations must adopt a proactive approach that balances trust with verification to safeguard sensitive data in an increasingly interconnected digital world.
