Attackers exploit this flaw by convincing users to visit malicious websites or interact with compromised web pages. The attacker-controlled page can activate a hidden engine in the extension that reaches into WhatsApp Web. The attacker then uses this engine to steal WhatsApp data, including chat lists, contact names, messages, and profile data. The attack relies on the victim’s interaction with the malicious web page, not on malware installation or cookie theft. The attacker needs only the victim to visit a crafted URL, making the attack simple and indirect.

Impact, Implications, and Remediation

If exploited, this flaw allows attackers to silently access sensitive WhatsApp Web data without raising suspicion. The attack can lead to the unintentional disclosure of private conversations and contact information. This exposes users to privacy breaches and potential social engineering threats. Because the flaw affects a widely used extension and leverages inherent browsing policies, its impact is significant. For security, users should update or disable the affected extension immediately. Since no specific remediation guidance is provided in the report, users should seek advice from Adobe or relevant security authorities to address this vulnerability formally.
