Quick Takeaways

  1. CISA, NSA, and Cyber Security Centre warn of Chinese hackers using Brickstorm malware to backdoor VMware vSphere servers, creating rogue virtual machines and stealing sensitive data through encrypted channels and persistent techniques.
  2. The attackers gained long-term access, compromised domain controllers, exported cryptographic keys, and captured Active Directory data, demonstrating sophisticated lateral movement from the DMZ to internal networks.
  3. Cybersecurity experts advise organizations to utilize specific detection tools (YARA, Sigma rules), monitor network edges, and segment networks to identify and block Brickstorm activity and related threats.
  4. CrowdStrike links Brickstorm attacks to Chinese hacking group Warp Panda, noting deployment of additional malware (Junction, GuestConduit) targeting VMware environments across U.S. sectors in 2025.

The Core Issue

Recently, a serious cyber threat has emerged involving Chinese hackers who backdoored VMware vSphere servers using Brickstorm malware. This threat was reported by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in collaboration with the NSA and Canada’s Cyber Security Centre. They analyzed eight samples of Brickstorm malware, which the attackers used to hide rogue virtual machines and steal credentials by cloning snapshots. These hackers targeted victim networks through compromised web servers in demilitarized zones, then moved laterally into internal systems, including critical servers like domain controllers and an ADFS server, remaining active from April 2024 through September 2025. Consequently, they gained access to sensitive data, including cryptographic keys and Active Directory information, while maintaining persistence through advanced encryption and self-repair mechanisms.

The reason behind these attacks appears to be espionage or credential theft, aimed at infiltrating high-value organizational networks and extracting sensitive information. The hackers’ activities have been attributed to a Chinese group tracked as Warp Panda by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which also linked these operations to previous malware campaigns. The report highlights that such malicious activities are ongoing threats, especially for critical infrastructure and government agencies. CISA and its partners are actively urging organizations to detect Brickstorm activity using specific indicators of compromise and to implement security measures such as network segmentation, monitoring, and blocking suspicious traffic. These warnings come as part of a larger effort to alert the public and protect vital networks from persistent and sophisticated cyber espionage campaigns.

Potential Risks

The recent warning from CISA about the Chinese “BrickStorm” malware highlights a serious threat that can impact any business. If your company uses VMware servers, you’re at risk. These malware attacks can block access to vital data or corrupt systems, leading to costly downtime. As a result, your operations, reputation, and revenue may suffer significantly. Moreover, without proper security measures, cyber attackers can exploit vulnerabilities, stealing sensitive information or even taking control of your infrastructure. Consequently, this compromises your business’s stability and customer trust. Therefore, it is crucial to stay vigilant, update your systems promptly, and invest in robust cybersecurity defenses to prevent such damaging attacks.

Possible Remediation Steps

In an ever-evolving cyber threat landscape, swift and effective remediation is essential to protect vital infrastructure and mitigate potential damages, especially when it concerns critical vulnerabilities like those exploited by “BrickStorm” malware targeting VMware servers, as warned by CISA.

Immediate Patch
Apply the latest security patches released by VMware promptly to close known vulnerabilities exploited by BrickStorm.

Vulnerability Assessment
Conduct thorough scans of all VMware servers to identify vulnerable versions and configurations.

Network Segmentation
Isolate VMware management networks from general traffic to prevent lateral movement of malware.

Enhanced Monitoring
Implement continuous monitoring of network traffic and system logs to detect abnormal behavior indicative of compromise.

Access Control
Enforce strict access controls and multi-factor authentication for all management interfaces and administrator accounts.

Incident Response Plan
Prepare and activate a detailed incident response plan to quickly contain, analyze, and remediate any infections.

User Education
Train staff on security best practices and awareness to minimize the risk of phishing or accidental vulnerabilities.

Backup and Recovery
Ensure recent, verified backups are available and can be rapidly restored to restore affected systems securely.

Vendor Coordination
Maintain communication with VMware and cybersecurity agencies for updates, guidance, and support regarding emerging threats like BrickStorm.
