HybridPetya Ransomware Breaks Windows Secure Boot

The Issue

ESET-Forscher haben entdeckt, dass eine bislang unidentifizierte, möglicherweise frühe Version eines Cybercrime-Tools – wahrscheinlich ein Proof-of-Concept – in Umlauf ist, das eine ausgeklügelte Ransomware-Attacke ermöglicht. Diese Attacke nutzt eine schwache Stelle (CVE-2024-7344) in einer signierten Microsoft EFI-Datei (reloader.efi), die bereits gepatcht wurde, um in Systeme einzudringen. Die Angreifer ersetzen den legitimen Windows-Bootloader durch eine korrumpierte Version, die den Systemstart manipuliert. Beim nächsten Neustart stürzt das System absichtlich ab, sodass der kompromittierte Bootloader das Malware-Programm HybridPetya startet, das dann die Master File Table (MFT) verschlüsselt und somit den Zugang zu den Daten blockiert.

Die Attacke richtet sich an noch nicht näher bestimmte Opfer, bei denen die Angreifer eine Schwachstelle ausnutzen, um umfassende Kontrolle zu erlangen und ihre Angriffe unbemerkt durchzuführen. Das Ganze wird von Sicherheitsforschern bei ESET beobachtet und dokumentiert, die vermuten, dass es sich bei der eingesetzten Software noch in der Testphase befindet, jedoch bereits potenziell eine ernsthafte Bedrohung darstellt. Dieses Vorgehen zeigt – auf höchst technische Weise – wie Cyberkriminelle Schwachstellen in Windows-Systemen ausnutzen, um tief in der Systemarchitektur einzudringen und wertvolle Daten zu verschlüsseln.
